Music?

MUSIC?

People sometimes ask me about music. I like all kinds of Christian music as long as the message comes through. I even listen to music groups about which I strongly disagree with their theology. (Hillsong, etc.) I have learned to worship Christ without letting other things distract me.

I do like some secular music especially when it is accomplished music. I avoid dirt and sex and explicit cursing. But I like classical to Motown to rock to symphonic metal to epic to Barry Manilow to movie themes to Gregorian chants. I am a musician so I can enjoy a wide variety of music.

So if you only listen to Christian music and expect everyone else to do likewise then you must judge me. But take a number since that line is very long. But if you like guitar music here is a little something:

I won't judge you Pastor Rick, but I only listen to Praise and Worship music.
On the rare occasion I am channel surfing in my car on the radio, I will stop and listen to a song that reminds me of my husband, but other songs remind me of my unsaved days, and I'd rather not go back there. Most of the time while in my car I listen to the news, traffic and weather.

Music is such an important part of our walk with Jesus, and our worship of Him. We must be careful to make sure it honors God, and edifies us.

You can listen to what you like, but I believe we, as people in the flesh need to make sure that we not put ourselves in a place of temptation. Not all Christian music sung in apostate churches is bad as long, like you said, it is biblical in nature, honors God, and edifies the believer.

I hope you are okay Pastor, because the way you wrote this post makes it seem like you are looking for, hope I say this in a loving manner, looking for someone to confront you. Please know I keep you before the Lord, in prayer everyday, and I hope whatever is on your mind is resolved quickly.

Gob Bless you dear brother, and may the peace of our Lord Jesus be with you this night.

My father was in his sixties when Dire Straits hit the music scene in the 80's and he had their album. Yes an album. A disc that played on a machine that produced music from the disc. Ipods were still a thought of the future, lol.

Be advised, my dear sister, that I never write looking for someone to confront me. Never. In fact, although sometimes confrontation is necessary it is distasteful to me. Thank you for your honsesty.
I am OK but I appreciate your prayers greatly.

I'm sorry Pastor Rick, I hope I didn't offend you. Not my intention.

No Cherie, you did not offend me at all. I appreciate you. Anyone who supports overseas missions is always OK in my book!

reasonable service Pastor, reasonable service. All members of the Body should be supporting the poor as commanded in the Word of God, not getting Benny Hinn out of debt.

Besides, not my money, it is given to me to give to those who need it, the poor, ministry etc. But it was supposed to be done in secret so that my treasure is stored in heaven. Please thank God, not me. Couldn't do it without Him.

Speaking of supporting ministry.......when are you starting the fellowship?

Had the blessed opportunity to speak to Jackie this afternoon. She is such a sweet sister in the Lord. I thank God He lead me to her. I haven't heard from Mrs. K in a while, I hope she is doing well. Hannah, the last we emailed was still having difficulties, please all, keep her in prayer.

I tried to have a good impact on my boys by playing a variety of music, but mainly worship. I tried to keep an ear on what lyrics were in the songs. One day, as teens, they were recording an old 80's song by Bad Company (need I say more, hence the name), of which I said whaaa??? when I walked past the room; they replied, we're singing: "feel like making fudge".

Just one more anecdote from a well-intentioned mom who didn't always know what was going on.

I love music and know it's draws us in like bees to honey. However, today's secular tunes can't be compared to the talent in the 60's, 70's 80's music. Today's music, well..... am now sounding like my parents did.

As a christian, I'm just steered now towards worship music. Was taught once in church that it's been said that Lucifer was the most beautiful angel who also was responsible for the music which was used to worship God. After the fall, one of his schemes is to seduce us with this talent away from God.

I do love the Hillsong series of songs among the many varieties of gospel music. There is an anointing that reaches out through the internet into the screen. There is no perfect choir or band or song leader, but they, in their imperfection, lead us exalt and concentrate on the perfect One.

Not all Hillsong songs are good. Read the lyrics before you adopt it as a worship song. That church has women pastors and the Bible says that a little leven spoils the whole lump.

The Bible says that all believers are priests unto God under LORD Jesus Christ Their High Priest!

Wow, I feel the same way. I love much of the music you mention. I don't listen to it all the time, but some of it is just so good. My problem with much of today's "worship" music is that it is poor quality. I've often listened to a song and thought a fourth grader could have written the lyrics.

Another thing that bugs me about some of today's Christian music is that it has a trance-like quality. Lots of repetition, same thing over and over. I believe the underlying theme is to put people into some kind of enhanced emotional state so that they lose all sense of discernment when the pastor starts teaching his unscriptural message (think IHOP, Bethel, etc.).

Love those old classic hymns, though!
