Is It Law or Is It Life?

IS IT LAW OR IS IT LIFE?

To pull the Mosaic Law from the cross and parading it around suggesting everyone should embrace it is like peddling the exact poison that killed us all.

Many centuries ago God gave a law to a man named Moses. We call that the Mosaic law. It served a multiple of purposes but in general there were three main purposes for that law. They were the knowledge of sin, the blood sacrifice for that sin, and the foreshadowing of the final and complete sacrifice for sin through the Lord Jesus. Metaphorically speaking Paul calls the Law a “schoolmaster” which brought us to Christ.

Now the Law was necessary as long as the final and complete sacrifice still had not come. But when Christ died and resurrected from the dead the price for sin had been paid for through His blood and there was no need for any animal sacrifice. And the knowledge of sin became one of the ministries of the Holy Spirit which is far greater and more powerful than the Law. And after Christ came the schoolmaster was no longer needed since it has brought us to the New Covenant found in Christ and in Christ alone.

But, sadly, many people still cling to the Law as if it is still needed today even in the face of ample Scriptural evidence that it has been done away with, and even the mixing of the Mosaic Law with the grace of God is spiritual poison. This misunderstanding about law and grace has led to all kinds of doctrinal mischief as well as an unfortunate energy given to spread Mosaic morality rather than the gospel of grace. And of course many who espouse bringing the Mosaic Law through the gates of the New Covenant suggest that those who do not are condoning sin and in effect creating some kind of anarchy. That is a self serving misnomer.

Nothing could be further from the truth. We have the New Testament Scriptures as well as the indwelling of God’s Spirit. So why would we need a very few truths outlined in the Mosaic Law? The answer is we do not and the entire Mosaic Law has been vanquished in the glorious light of the everlasting gospel and the miraculous inhabitation of God Himself in every born again believer. To the unbeliever sin kills. But to the believer sin requires correction from a loving Heavenly Father. That is made clear in the twelfth chapter of Hebrews. We are no longer under Law and death but we are now under love and life.

Rom.8: For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

The writer of Hebrews tells us that Jesus was not made a priest under Aaron as is laid out in the Law. In fact, the Spirit calls that law the “carnal commandment”. You see we have a spiritual law written upon our hearts that is greater than that written in stone. And when we wish to be in subjection to the Mosaic Law we diminish the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus. It seems like such a simple and obvious truth but in reality the Law has a strong attraction to the flesh. You see, obedience to the statute makes us feel self righteous while obedience to Christ humbles us. The Law kills but the Spirit brings life. We have life in Christ Jesus not because of our obedience but because of faith in Him alone. An earthly son has sonship not because of his obedience to his earthly father but because he was born into that family. His obedience to his father is because of love and respect and not because of any earthly statute.

The difference between the gospel of grace and the demands of the law is a colossal gulf. One can never be achieved while the other can be had simply and only by faith. And within that lies the eternal glory of God Himself! Christ is THE END of the law to all who believe. No one can keep the law, but we can obey our Father in an atmosphere of grace. The law demands perfection. He who breaks the law in one way breaks the entire law in all ways. But grace is founded completely upon the Perfect Son of God.

It is revealing of just how the flesh desires to have some way of measuring his spiritual success. So even though the letter kills, many still want to embrace that same letter. And that compromises the life in the Spirit. Even if you strongly reject the law in salvation, when you embrace it in sanctification you still are doing despite to grace. And the Scriptures paint it even more bleak and dangerous than that.

Gal.3: O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?

Can there be any clearer teaching? In fact Paul says that those that trust in the law for their sanctification are being deceived by a spirit of witchcraft. Pretty strong words. So what could be the reason that so many desire to have the law be their guide? Why do so many believers contend so strongly that believers are still under the law? Well the answer, of course, is always the religious flesh. And that religious flesh desires to achieve something tangible. The flesh wars against the Spirit. So worship must be orderly and with certain music. Doctrines must be systematic and organized. And there must be complete structure in everything with no room for any diversion from what is already planned.

And when that happens not only is the Spirit pushed away, but eventually you can get a self righteous spirit about your brand. And fortified by the abuses and misuses all around you, you run to the law. But in a larger and more grievous sense incorporating the law into the New Covenant does genuine harm to the ministry of the Spirit and even unintentionally diminishes the utter and complete fullness of Christ’s sacrifice. But it is God’s will to use both the New Testament Scriptures with the guidance of the indwelling Holy Spirit to empower a true believer in the sanctification process. And in the end a true believer’s motivation will be his love for Christ and not an outward obedience to tablets of stone. In fact obedience now goes all the way to the thoughts and intents of the heart and it does not stop at just an outward and visible commission of a sin.

And therein lies another example of the supremacy of the law of the Spirit and the subordinate essence of the Mosaic Law. On the Day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit came to indwell each and every true believer. That in and of itself is a monumental mystery. But He did not come just to provide a mental image of the Law of Moses. No, He came to do many things one of which is the conviction of sin. And when we read Hebrews chapter twelve we see that it is not only sin which should be avoided but weights as well. That means there are things that are not out and out sin that should be avoided by a follower of Jesus and the Holy Spirit guides us into that truth as well. Tablets of stone could never do that.

Oh the surpassing glory of the ministry of the Spirit! Oh the glory of this New Covenant which was ushered in by Christ our Lord and has made a living body of that same Christ and is empowered and illuminated and guided by the precious Holy Spirit!

II Cor.3: Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward:
Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;
Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:
How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?
For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.

Allow your ears to hear and your hearts to embrace this glorious truth. We ourselves are now the “tablets of stone” read of all men. Our lives are earthen vessels which allow His glory to be seen by this darkened world. Look at verse seven and can you not see the words “which glory was to be done away”? There it is for all to see. There are two glories, one of the Old and one of the New Testament. In fact the glory of the Old Testament would eventually be seen in its death when the New Testament was ushered in. And we now are fleshy tables upon which the Word of God has been written in the sacred place of our hearts.

And that is why we must feed our hearts with God’s Word and through prayerful surrender we not only allow, but we beseech the precious Spirit to engrave that Word into our hearts and infuse its power through our entire being. Think about that glorious process and now tell me about the ordinances of “touch not” and “taste not” which Paul says are to no benefit of the spirit but they appeal to the flesh.

Gal.4: But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?
10 Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.
11 I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.

Look at what the Spirit calls the Mosaic Law. He says they are the “weak and beggarly elements” and they are “bondage”. And Paul asks why would you turn back to the bondage of the wilderness when you have been set free in the glorious liberty purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ. This is not a license to sin…God forbid! This is a new creature created in His likeness and who is in a constant state of renewal and transformation which can only happen through the Spirit and can never be altered by the dictates of the Mosaic Law.

Oh I do not doubt the sincerity of most of the believers who I have met who strongly tout some of the Law of Moses as our template and standard, but our standard and template soars much higher than any tenants of the Mosaic Law. In fact reestablishing some moral parts of the Mosaic is the easy way out. You can feel good because you do not steal or commit adultery or lie. But in reality that is nothing more than a conscience salve which circumvents the Spirit and allows the flesh to embrace a much lesser standard. Our template is Christ Himself and the dictates of the Mosaic Law barely touch the hem of His glorious garment!

Gal.5: Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

I appeal in love to all my brethren. Take some time to fast and pray without your peers reinforcing what just may be significantly unscriptural. Seek the Spirit’s guidance and allow your opinions to be sorely tested. Do not cling to the “license to sin” misnomer. It is absolutely wrong. But there is freedom in Christ which is unspeakable and full of glory. And once you have thrown off the body of death known as the Law of Moses you can immediately see that your life, and your dedication, and your discipleship is far greater than obeying a list. It now is such a great challenge that you can never attain it but you now have found the God given desire to pursue it with all your heart and soul.

It is very difficult to fully explain the workings of the Spirit. I mean how can I walk with consistent conviction about the thoughts and intents of my heart which are far below perfection every single day, and yet I can still experience a joy and a contentment and a divine energy to “press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus". The answer is profound and glorious! It is because I now walk in the ministration of the Spirit and not the ministration of condemnation.

Rom.8: There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Halleluiah! The Law brings condemnation but the Spirit brings the correction of a family member. There is an infinite difference between condemnation and correction. If I steal the neighbor’s bicycle my father makes me return it and corrects me sternly but my neighbor wants me arrested. The difference is I have a blood relationship with my father but my neighbor is to me a stranger. Can you not see this magnificent difference? A lost person steals and he is condemned but a child of God steals and he warrants stern correction from our Father.

And what indeed is the motive for that correction? The writer of Hebrews tells us it is love of God our Father the strongest force in the universe. A slave owner calls his slave in and informs him that he is giving him his freedom. And the master also tells him that he is adopting him and placing his name in the will. The slave is overwhelmed with gratitude. In fact, the slave now has a love for His master that he never had before. So now this slave is free but he instead chooses to serve His master without being just a piece of property. And he doesn’t just serve His master but now he loves him. And his service now is propelled by his love for his master, or now his father, and why would he want to go back to the days when he was just property? He is now a son and every day his heart goes deeper into understanding that and how it has transformed his way of life and thinking process.

And here we are now, the sons of the Living God and brothers with the Risen Christ. These words are not semantics. These are the words of life which reveal an eternal miracle performed by the grace of God and the Spirit of God on our behalf completely on the basis of faith. Do not go rummaging through the past to pull out that which had no life at all. Get hold of the glory of the New Covenant and walk in the power and presence of the Spirit and allow your life to shine with the incandescence of the Lamb of God. The world does not need law. They need life.

Amen, Amen, Amen!!! I love this teaching. Those who want to continue living under the law must be willing to suffer the consequences of breaking the law outlined in the OT. I will never understand people who want to do this instead of living in the freedom Christ died to freely give us.

Has the LORD stopped teaching the unsaved out of His law? No.
Should a Christian stop reading the moral law? No.

The most famous and comprehensive sermon ever recorded by our Lord, the Sermon on the Mount, does not contain a hint of the Mosaic law. And in fact He often says "You have heard..." and the changes the Mosaic Law.

A former close friend of mine has gotten into this, following the law and the teachings of Michal Rood. I cannot have any friendship with him anymore because that is all he will talk about. I said we as couples could get together and go out to eat but only if he would not talk about the law and his beliefs. He said he would not be able to do that. His frustration with the church being so much like the world is the reason he said we need to study the law and obey it, all 613 commandments. Very sad but you can't reason with him. It is amazing to see the number of "rabbis" that are on TBN and other Christian networks. Randy

Pastor Rick, Praise God for your last two sermons! I am in a situation right now that these sermons have given me a great insight as to what do and say. I will not go into detail what this has shown me.

As for what the Anonymous post said is a contradiction to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The unsaved are “lawless”, so how can the law teach them anything. Even the Mosaic Law cannot lead them to God. A born again believer is saved by the precious blood of Jesus and even a cursory review of the Law of Moses shows us the freedom we have from its bondage.

John 3:10 Jesus answered and said to him, "Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?
:11 Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness.
:12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
:13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.
:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
:15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
:17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
:18 "He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
:19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
:20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.
:21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God."

We cannot condemn anyone, unless first we condemn ourselves.

Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Jesus made reference to the Law and Prophets as a unit, "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill," (Matt. 5:17).

It is the spirit of antichrist that seeks to abolish the Law or the Prophets. Mathew 5:17 is the testimony of God Himself.

There is no clearer teaching than this one. God's will is for us to trust and obey what Lord Jesus teaches!

Rick Frueh said...

That's a new one. The spirit of antichrist. I guess Paul had it!

Paul didn't seek to abolish the Law or the Prophets but to fulfill the Law and the Prophets.

The Sermon on the Mount states amongst other things: Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Clearly God has to be cleansing or blessing the condition of our heart or we couldn't love Him wholeheartedly or honor our father and mother in a way that brings glory to His pure name.

Christ came and fulfilled the Law "we uphold" not so on the basis of keeping the Law we are saved. The Law was predetermined to be so rigorous no man could keep it but Christ. And indeed He kept it perfectly precisely because no man could keep it. Justification by Grace through Faith not the Law saves us.

There's this from Romans chapters 1 and 3 that some have twisted to say upholding the Law is keeping it which defeats the purpose of the Law, which is to give us the knowledge of our sin nature so that this knowledge leads us to Jesus Christ. As Rick teaches in this post, the Law is a schoolmaster to lead us away from our self-righteousness and unequivocally to the Righteousness revealed in the Gospel:

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” (Romans 1:16, 17 ESV)

For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, since God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law. (Romans 3:28-31 ESV)

See What I am saying? No One Agrees!

How do we know anything is true anymore?! My sister says I need to follow God's Commandments and the Sabbath. I said to her yes, the ones Jesus said:

Luke 10:27
And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

She said the Ten Commandments and that we have been lied to regarding on keeping the Sabbath. Also to celebrate the Passover. I am a sinner since I do what Jesus said? I do not keep the Sabbath. Am I wrong? Am I going to hell? A sinner will not enter into Heaven. I thought I was a sinner saved by Grace, but I am told that is wrong!?????

If everything I do is wrong, how can I have faith. I thought I was doing a little something right by viewing myself as a sinner saved by Grace and to follow the Gospel. I am never going to get this right and it brings great despair. How Pastor Rick do you know this is correct? How? And what if we are supposed to follow the commandments as well as the Gospel? How do we do that? How do we keep from sinning?

I am so distraught. And if I am not saved, God will not hear my prayers.

"No one can keep the law, but we can obey our Father in an atmosphere of grace."

How is this done? What does it mean to obey our Father in an atmosphere of grace?

I thought my faith was right but I am told I have been deceived. How then do I do this? What does this mean?

If we do not keep the Commandments of God, we will go to hell. That is what I am told. That is what the Scriptures I have been shown prove. How then is what you say true. What if there is more? If I believe your post and it is wrong, I am going to die forever.

This is serious and very scary. Especially after last Saturday. She told me a saved person can;

2 Corinthians 10:5
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Romans 7:23
But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

These Scriptures mean, I am told, that we should be able to do this. I cannot always do this, sometimes I allow my flesh to get the better of me. I am weak, and now apparently going to hell. How can any of this be true when so many people are at odds? How can we be sure? I am now so unsure of everything. I don't know what is true anymore and it breaks my heart. It is devastating to find out I may be wrong. I don't think so, but I am beginning to think I may be. I just don't know anymore, and there is no place to run. I feel like I am slipping and I cannot get a hold of anything.

Cherie c. said...

People who follow the Law think they are following what Jesus said in the NT. He said to keep the commandments, but fail to see what commandments He meant.

At least my sister's daughter isn't wearing Orthodox Jewish women's clothing. Or at least she wasn't today.

I don't think she is right, but I am afraid that with all the disputing going on I could be wrong and should agree with her. I just don't know anymore.

Pastor Rick, what if Sabbath Keepers are right and we are wrong? How can we be sure? What do the early church fathers say on this subject?

Cherie c. said...

She said we were not born with sin, we choose sin. I do not see Scripture on this. I know what David said, but I also know that one of the Epistles says we are dead in sin.

What is correct? Are we born with sin or do we choose sin? Do we make a choice? God or sin?

How did all I thought the Scriptures said now sound doubtful? How in such a short time did I lose my faith? Is this judgment on me? Did I get too secure in my faith? Is is wrong to rely upon your faith and rest in it? Where did I go wrong?

Cherie c. said...

But it is God’s will to use both the New Testament Scriptures with the guidance of the indwelling Holy Spirit to empower a true believer in the sanctification process.

She said that sanctification is to be set apart. She said we are already sanctified. Set apart. We need to obey the commandments. I thought the Word said we are working on our salvation, or do I have that wrong too?

I feel sick over this.

Cherie c. said...

With tears Pastor Rick as I finish reading your post. I know this is right, but what if it is wrong? I have been told not to trust this because it says we can sin.

Your post sounds true, but what if my sister is right? What if all I have believed has been a lie? What if there is more to salvation then just belief? Do you understand why I ask these questions? She uses Scripture to prove her point, but I don't read it that way. I read it as you do, but she says I am reading it wrong. I want to send your post to her, but I know she won't read it.

I so love the Lord because He gave me something I certainly do not deserve as stated by Scripture. No one told me that recently, Scripture says that. But how I am still feeling about last Saturday, and my sisters raised eye brow after I told her I repented, it was then she said that those who are saved do not sin. So I feel like my repentance and asking for forgiveness was all in vain. It doesn't count. I did as the Bible said, but it wasn't good enough. I am so tired. I know I sound dramatic, but this is life or death isn't it? We all just go along like every thing is fine when its not! No one seems to take this seriously. I am so tired of the nonsense, the discord, the division, the apostasy.

You don't have to publish this if you don't want to Pastor.

Cherie, we will still sin but we are no longer of the sin. Satan is the sinner.

1 John 3:4
Everyone practicing the sin, also is doing lawlessness; and the sin is the lawlessness.

1John 3:8-9
the one practicing the (definite article) sin (meaning source) is from out of the devil, because the devil is sinning from the beginning., for this the Son of God was manifested, in order that He might loosen(untie, unbind) the works of the devil.

Everyone who has been born from out of God is not practicing sin, because His seed is abiding in him; and he is not able to continue sinning, because he has been born from out of God.

1 John 2:1
My little children these things I am writing to you, in order that you should not sin. And if anyone should sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ righteous one;

Cherie, what your sister said that those who are saved do not sin is a false teaching.
We all need to know that both non Christians and Christians sin!

Jesus gave His disciples these words to pray in Mathew 6...forgive us our trespasses (sins) as we forgive those who trespass (sin) against us. His words are still valid!

Cherie, the desire to forgive is a blessing from God, as is the desire to repent. Endeavor never to reckon what God blesses you with as vain.

Keep doing what the Bible says and you will continue to be blessed. Be encouraged Cherie for you are a deep searcher for truth.

Be encouraged for the one who is born again does not habitually abide in sin. He may fall into it, but he does not practice it as a lifestyle. Dear readers, any Christian who would say that he does not sin anymore fails to agree with 1 John 1:8 which says, "If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us."

These verses should really encourage you Cherie that you are doing many things right.

1 John 1:8-10 "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us."

Share them with your sister for she needs to be blessed by God with the right understanding on this vital matter.

Thank you dear brothers and sisters, I am humbled by your encouragement and love. I pray God blesses you richly for your compassion and good works by faith in Him and His Word. I have been thinking for now I should not visit for a while. She has grown very hard hearted expecially if you don't agree with her. She is in error, but won't listen. When I'm there it feels very opressive. She had bounced from one heretical ministry to another over the course of these past almost 20 years and now Sabbath Keepers. All I can do is pray. She and her husband are also preppers and 2nd amendment people although her husband isn't saved. I'm not perfect either, but I pray to stay away from heresy. As per Scripture, she had fallen from Grace, and the irony is she does not believe in eternal security. I'm afraid for her. I pray God has mercy on her.

Thanks again for your words of encouragement, I do not take them lightly.

The below url address is where my sister got her idea to be a sabbath keeper. This is the ministry that invited my sister and her daughter to do an Internet radio program preaching to men and women. You only have to look at the title page for their vision statement to know it is heretic. It says you must follow the ten commandments after you are saved. Heart Vision? Jesus said our hearts are evil, so right there I'm suspicious.

They use Scripture to prove their point and teaching. They also say you can lose your salvation. Is this true?

Beware of going hear if you're weak right now. There is a pull to believe or at the very least make you doubt.

Watchmanonthewall.m.webs.com

It is the mobile site. Pastor if you go to this site, can you tell me how they are using Scripture to make it sound plausible? Law and Grace is the Gospel, but something isn't right. If Paul's description of the law didn't come to mind, then I might just agree with them. Jesus did say to keep the commandments. Somehow discernment ministries miss sabbath keepers.

What does it mean in the NT to keep the commandments? Why does this passage make people become sabbath keepers?

Thank you Pastor Rick.
