Christian Conferences Exposed

CHRISTIAN CONFERENCES EXPOSED

As transportation became more and more accessible in America many things began to change. Vacations could now be enjoyed across the nation, people could drive many miles to their jobs, many would travel thousands of miles to see a sporting event, and believers could pick a church to attend from a large menu of churches within even a fifty mile radius. And during the sixties especially another phenomenon arose within the evangelical community. It was called the Christian conference.

The format was basically this: One or more famous preachers were slated to speak and special music was also an important part of the event. These preachers became famous through periodicals, radio, television, and by many local churches within their particular doctrinal clique. So the independent Baptists knew of Jack Hyles and John Rice, and the Calvinists knew of John McArthur, the Charismatics knew of Oral Roberts and Kenneth Hagin, and Southern Baptists knew about W. A. Criswell and Adrian Rodgers. And these men and others were enlisted in a conference designed for their particular doctrinal bent and through extensive publicity that included mail outs, pulpit announcements, television and radio spots, and glossy pamphlets people were informed about the event.

Now these events charged admission when they were held at some public auditorium and even some charged when they were held in some large church auditorium. And they are well oiled events that are well scripted and organized. Most of these events are not geared toward evangelism, and most if not all are not geared toward a prayer meeting event. The drawing card are the notoriety of the men and women speakers as well as the singers. People come form all around and gladly pay the entrance fee just to hear their favorite preacher who they believe speaks the truth that they espouse at the time. Back in those days people would wait in line to have their Bible signed or the book they just bought.

And after the conference whether it is one night or a weekend event things return to normal. Yes, people have been excited and feel uplifted, but that feeling usually does not translate into any long term and life changing affects. And the plane fares and hotel accommodations and meals for the speakers and singers have been paid for as well as some handsome gratuity. These events, depending upon the size, deal with many thousands of dollars and some run into the millions. And if you count the travel and hotel and meal expenses of those who attend it can be quite a lot of money. And they sell a lot of books etc. as well.

Now in former times when there were no CDs or tapes and before television and radio men had to be present for you to hear them. But today you can purchase their books and tapes and CDs and listen to them for less than $10.00. So why would anyone spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars to hear someone they could hear in their home? The answer is very clear. These events are both ecclesiastical entertainment as well as open idolatry. People do not go to a conference to be convicted about their own spiritual lives. And they do not go to pray and be transformed and repent. They go to hear some they hold in high esteem. And they go because they are drawn by slick advertisements and the human drawing card.

Gal.2: But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man's person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me:

Some men of respect went to hear Paul but he said that God is not impressed with men’s reputations or earthly notoriety. And Paul described himself as the “offscouring of the earth” and “the least of all the saints”. But today men love to have “Dr.” before their name and be acknowledged by many as great men and women of God. Many are very wealthy even if they preach against the prosperity teachings. The entire construct is a scam and unworthy of the cause of Jesus Christ. Do the masses come with desperation about the spiritual condition of the world or do they come to hear what they already know and believe? The prosperity folks go to hear more prosperity, and the orthodox folks go to hear how bad the charismatic movement is, and the church growth folks desire to hear about how to build a large church, and on and on it goes. As I said, the crowd lays down handsome sums in order to hear what they want to hear but could already hear at home for nothing.

This is the ecclesiastical form of a rock concert. In fact, some conferences will see very long lines so people can rush in and get the best seats. It is an embarrassment to the early believers, the martyrs, and the Lord Jesus Himself. When have you see people pay large sums and line up hours early in order to get inside a prayer meeting? Don’t kid yourself. The flesh is not excited over prayer. This Christian conference phenomenon is not Christian and continues to be a legitimate part of a capitalist economic structure. People pay money and a very few accumulate money and round and round it goes and nothing changes at all. And this phenomenon can be found in almost every doctrinal wing of evangelicalism. If the speakers had to pay all their expenses out of their own pocket and if they received no remuneration there would be no conferences. But the restaurants and the hotels and the malls love these events.

All of us have attended one or more of these so this is not directed at anyone specifically. But when you mature, and when you understand the open teachings of the New Testament, and when you understand church history, you must see the deep compromise inherent in these conferences. The poor cannot afford them to say nothing of Christians around the world who live in fear for their lives or who pray for clean water and food for their family.

Some of these events come with great pageantry and are arranged with much professionalism. And the speakers are presented with an aura of uncommon spiritual insight. In America many of the leaders in these different movements are looked upon with awe and many admirers will believe almost anything they say or teach. I can remember many who did not care that Jack Hyles was preaching the same sermon they had heard several times. They were still exhilarated that they could hear him again. And that kind of idolatry runs through all the different evangelical strains. All have their heroes. And the concept of “heroes” has crept into the evangelical community which is a subtle and not so subtle form of idolatry. In fact when you set up a hero you subconsciously lend your mind and heart to that man or woman.

And these conferences lend themselves nicely to promoting such heroes as well as contributing to the wealth of these men and women. And please tell me where the Scriptures teach that church leaders are to be wealthy and how that kind of wealth does not affect them in the slightest. To be honest these conferences serve no real purpose unless you suggest that only by hearing that man in person can God’s Spirit work. And when you add all the accompanying trinkets and books and CDs as well as fine dining and wonderful hotel accommodations, well, you have a western construct that is really much like a political or an insurance convention. How can we justify such spending when the need both spiritually and physically is so very great? Our need to be stroked and a weekend of “in person” experience supersedes any urgent situation even among starving believers.

Yes, it is a wonderful spectacle which uplifts the spirits for a while and drains much money from thousands and redistributes it to men and women who do not need it. Wealthy speakers from every camp receive a salary from their church and add to it via these conferences. And they sell the recordings on their website. The prosperity preachers are obvious in their wealth accumulation, but men who preach against that message are wealthy as well. Try and bring what Whitfield and Wesley and Edwards did and what they sacrificed to preach God’s Word and try and justify the capitalist carousel which lives and breathes today. Look how far we have come, or more accurately, how far we have strayed.

I have put so called Christian leaders on a pedestal only twice in thirty years and it was because of the same error. Not reading the Word of God. Not knowing the truth. I thought they were better than me, and that God loved them more than me that is why they are leaders. What a stupid mindset and excuse for idol worship.

One was back in 1988 when Jimmy Swaggart got caught committing adultery. I was devastated. I had not yet learned of apostasy so I watched him every week. Well, God Bless my older sister (former Charismatic) who really laid into me about loving the man more than the message. Really convicted me. After that, I told myself I was not going to fall into that trap again. Um....yeah about that.....

Fast forward to 2010. Prophecy conference at my church where Dr. Jimmy DeYoung came to teach us end times prophecy. No, there was no charge since it was at church, but I helped Mrs. DeYoung (lovely lady) sell books, CDs, and other wares. Well my sister had been gone since 1997. She died from ALS so she wasn't here to be used by God to correct me again. Instead the Lord chastised me but good. I have learned a lesson the hard way. I don't know if I can truly say I was born again at those times because there is no way I can see I was when compared with Scripture. I did things in ignorance, but that is no excuse. See when your so wrapped up in yourself, these things happen.

I never paid to go to a conference. In fact my old church used to promote a woman's conference every September in PA, but I never went. Thank God. So called Christian Feminist are worse than secular. All it is is women's egos all dressed up in high heels and pretty clothes with a christian label.

Same feminist message only with a spiritual spin.

The Lord these past few years has really opened my eyes whether I wanted it or not. I have almost fallen into a similar trap with brothers and sisters I have met since coming out of the visible church since I am more grounded in the Word, I have avoided the trap although it hurts when these sweet brothers and sisters are in error. My only authority is the Word of God and that is the only way I can spot error and avoid it with myself and with those I fellowship with. And I have been accused of being in error, and sometimes I guess I am, but so far, my adherence to the Word of God has brought much personal persecution but blessing too. Personal because it is from my family and old church friends not from outside world. Blessing because it has made my walk so much more than I could ever ask for or deserve. To finally (quoting the Apostle Paul) be content in want and in abundance. To finally be serving the Lord as He would want me too even though I sin sometimes, and I struggle.

I sometimes sit and remember those days of feeling so loved, and such a part of Christianity. But it wasn't the Christianity that was real. It was the broad path with doctrines of demons and if it weren't for God's correction no matter how sever I felt it was at the time, I would have been lost forever.

With strength only from God the Holy Spirit can I hold on. And though I do not like being chasten by God our Father, I know it can only do me good. I do not hold myself in any esteem. I no longer want what was before, only what I am impatient for and that is the return of Jesus to the earth. That is one conference worth standing in line for during a hurricane.

There was a conference this week that has caused bad attention once again to the Christian community. I did not attend, nor did I stream any of the content and I probably won't. All I know is once again the name of Jesus has been tarnished and no one seems to care. Except for this post by Pastor Rick, no one cares that the most important aspect is how it reflects our Lord and Savior. I'm tired of American Christianity and all the falseness it is. My ears hurt from all the doctrines of demons and I ache for the sweet sound of the Lord's Word with conviction by godly Preachers.

Want a conference? Get in your prayer closet and meet with the Lord. He is due back at any moment. Now there is one conference that will really do something for you.

your sister in Christ Jesus,
Cherie c.

Cherie; what an honest testimony. And truth about women's conferences being a feminist message only with a spiritual spin.

I used to volunteer for a national women's outreach group. Every year, there'd be the call and appeal to go to the big conference to the west coast to hear the well-known guest speaker. The same women would have the money to fly there and attend. The same women would excitedly talk about the trip and make a special time to speak about the 'great conference' and the great word they received and share it with us. It wasn't anything that we couldn't have figured out for ourselves, by studying and living the Word. I used to wonder how come the Lord benefitted those of well means to attend, and so many poor christians in the world who never even heard of these people, never had the same privileges. Then though God's sound reason, I realized that He didn't create this 'conference' folly. He wasn't the author of any of it.

If it costs $$$, I have to conclude it's not of God. Jesus did not charge a fee, the apostles and disciples did not put themselves in a position to have to charge a fee. If any disciple of Christ says they need to rent an auditorium, and need the 'guests' to pay an entrance fee to cover the expensive promotion and organization fees, then it's lost it's savor. Yet, the Lord may choose to still inhabit that place, not because of men, but in spite of men, and because those who are still ignorant came in faith believing. And maybe some in the conference may have received a personal lesson from the Lord at that conference, in spite of the organizers, who have profit on their minds.

I know that I've been in a few church local conferences, and despite the fanfare of the christian speaker, the Lord's presence was felt during worship time and some could pray and intercede for others. I know only one thing. I can't put God in a box.

Despite scheming leaders, who have a real good plum situation, where they get the profit windfalls, the Lord still sees the hearts of some who keep reaching for Him, even though they are reaching in the wrong places. In fact, I reached in the wrong places at times in my early walk, and the Lord was so faithful and kept staying with me, until I listened to what He was telling me (not audible) but by reading His Word, and by the nudging of His Holy Spirit.

At this hour though, conferences are so condensed with the 'man' or 'woman' and almost worshipped and lifted up and made rich, and have no more a word for the people than a donkey, that it's nauseating to watch. And it turns people into cynics and skeptics and away from eternal salvation. It's Ezekiel 34 all over again. I pray that the Lord wills that at least one more time these wolves will be exposed before He returns.

I never really understood these "conferences" or their purpose for them. I myself have never been to one , nor have I ever wanted to go. Since when has the servant become greater than the Master!

The art of saying "they did it for the money" is unfortunately something that can never be verified. We cannot pretend to know what's in the hearts of men. I personally find it quite a stretch, to use as an example one of the speakers, to think that Dr. R.C. Sproul participated in the conference for the cash payday. I have followed Dr. Sproul for many years, and find that would be out of character for him, as someone who has shown a such an uncompromising love of scripture for decades.

Rick Frueh said...

I am judging the construct not men's hearts. However I have heard no one speak out against an obvious construct which does not mirror church history and is quite congruent with capitalist, secular events.

I see and understand the frustration behind this post, but I think it is a broad stroke that criticizes and denounces more than is necessary. Just this morning I was reading in Luke about the women that supported Jesus' ministry out of their means. There are also other references to compensating teachers in the New Testament, while in the Old Testament we see the Levites receiving offerings for the ministerial work they did, which I believe included teachings.

Yes, there are conferences labeled Christian that probably bring it a lot of money and many that attend are more attracted to the fame of the speaker than the message, be it Gospel or not. And yes, it's true that what is often shared is found in the Bible. But I attend church because I want to hear a teaching that helps me understand what I'm reading in the Bible. Yes, the Holy Spirit does that, but I find in edifying and challenging to listen to a Bible teaching. If I have to pay for that teaching, it is my choice and, I believe, simply a way to support that teacher in his/her ministry, much like paying a tithe to the church I regularly attend.

I do pray that if I ever exalt a teacher or speaker that the Spirit would quickly bring correction as another commenter testified. I will not, however, question the salvation of someone because they attend a conference.

I don't see how you can name names and then claim that you are not judging them. In all your other articles you name names and label them as leading their audience astray.

Rick Frueh said...

I suggested we all have been guilty in that area. I mentioned names from all different spectrums. I am judging the construct and those who participate are joining with that western construct.

Pastor Rick if this comment is out of line please do not post it.

To Unknown,

If Jesus sent out a glossy flyer stating He was putting on a conference in Nazareth right before The Passover, how many would attend? Jesus also states in the flyer that He will be selling His Book at the entrance and you can have it signed by Him, before or after the conference. Who and how many would attend?

I am being somewhat irreverent, but do you see what I am talking about? The majority of these conferences are about those that are doing the speaking and selling their books. The only book that I know of that will keep me close to God is the Bible, that and a lot of prayer asking Him what it is He is saying in those scriptures. This way I can better lead those that are un-believers to Jesus Christ.

I know you have read those verses in the Old Testament about not muzzling the ox on the threshing floor. Or the ones in the New Testament about paying a servant for the work they do. I was reared in a missionary family and my dad always said to trust in the Lord for your provision and you will never be disappointed.

One last thing, if these speakers at these conferences are saying this is Holy Spirit lead, then why charge a fee? If those same speakers write a book that they say the Holy Spirit told them to, did God charge them for that leading?

Joel

Maybe the answer to conferences is the church going back to the basics, the old ways. Each shepherd, pastor, shepherds, teaches and ministers to his small sheepfold in his own neighborhood. If every neighborhood took this approach, we would not need big conferences. There's nothing that the bible can't do to equip one small church that a big name can.

I am confused though. Some days I believe we should be offering ourselves to roam the world looking for a town or an area that has never heard the gospel message if we are to follow the instructions from the early church in Acts. On the other hand, if we're to stay where we live, should we concentrate solely on our one or two-mile radius, or neighborhood? We wouldn't have the time, money to travel to hear a word 3000 miles away if we would stop being antsy and using the gospel as a perk that gives the clergy lots of travel, staying in nice hotels, pampered and meeting with the best of the best? True shepherds have to slough through the hard ground. They should forsake taking tithing and offering money to pay for airfare and rentals and worldly pursuits.

I think gatherings should be no more than the shepherd can care for. No man and his wife can minister to 500, or even 100 people. It loses it's power, as they delegate to others to take on more responsibilities. I believe that one shepherd should only keep a home church of no more than 20, 30, or 40 people. This way each member learns, is studied, equipped and is ministered to and learns to minister. And, there are no great break-ups where strong personalities take over. If they want to be the "boss", they can be encouraged to start a church in their own neighborhood.

Dr. R.C. Sproul, what a phony! He had to move from Pennsylvania to Orlando Florida in order to respond more effectively to the growing demand for Dr. R.C. Sproul's teachings and the ministry's other educational recourses, the general offices were moved in 1984, and the ministry was renamed. ( Yeah, he couldn't drive around in his limo in the snow and pothole covered streets and the ministry's Yacht was down in florida anyway. )

There are many aspects to our life. It makes no sense in my opinion to throw around accusatory words like many commentators do on this blog without any or scant evidence.

Do you recall that Abraham was very rich? Some people are very capable and earn money in a way pleasing to God.

Ultimately, everyone has to answer to the LORD for their use of the gift of life. Until that time occurs multitudes could benefit from learning from gifted teachers like Adrian Rogers!

Rick Frueh said...

You can learn through the many avenues that can be listened to at home. The "I have to hear him in person or I cannot learn" suggestion is flawed.

Christian said...

Reine Gnade is another that reasons according to the flesh. You think when Jehovah states that Abraham was very rich he was talking about money? And the Lord teaches that a people without understanding will come to ruin. The blind leading the blind!

Anonymous said...

I don't agree totally with your thinking in this matter. Certainly learning at home is to be commended but so too is learning at conventions!

The Bible is full of people who sought Jesus out. They didn't stay at home only. The LORD God actually draws those who are hungering for truth to teachers of truth and many teachers of truth teach at conventions.

Christian, Abraham was blessed by the LORD body, soul and spirit. He was also rich! Study the Bible and you will have the opportunity to learn about this!

Rick Frueh said...

Abraham's riches were a foreshadowing of our riches in Christ. They have nothing to do with New Testament money teachings and in fact God has chosen the poor rich in faith.

Cherie c. said...

The reason they flocked to hear Jesus was because they did not have the means to learn the New Covenant. It wasn't written yet. And to witness His deity with the use of miracles.

Also, yes, Abraham was rich, but that was OT and there was a purpose to those riches. We dont follow OT life, we follow, or should, NT life. Would you PLEASE read your Bible in Context.

One more point, neither Jesus or the early church charged admission to hear the Gospel. Think we will ever see a free conference? Not likely. Not so long ago there used to be tent meetings people would attend to hear a preacher. No charge to attend, just a collection basket passed around for an offering if you had it. It is Biblical to support ministry, but not the way they do it today.

Anonymous said...

Rick, just because many people exploit conferences for their selfish gains doesn't mean that God will not bless what He can when people attend them. Conferences like in any other activity that we undertake ought to be dedicated wholeheartedly to the LORD.

In the Bible it teaches us to go into, not run away from, the world and preach the gospel. Jesus went into synagogues. Let's go into churches and conferences and plant the word of God too!

Reine Gnade

Cherie, why did people flock to see Jesus?

Firstly only those born again can testify to His deity fully believing that He is God.

Most that flocked to Him were unsaved irrespective of the miracles that that they had heard about or seen.

They all had different motivations why they flocked to see Him, but those who sought him earnestly and were wholeheartedly committed to Him the LORD blessed with a new life.

Cherie c said...

Anonymous, you are correct on both counts, but in that day His name went through the area about the good things He did, so because they didn't have radio, internet, and tv they had to go to where He was to hear him. And all witnessed His diety, but only those who repented and born of the Spitit were able to realize this. But all still saw His miracles in person. We were discussing conferences and the truth behind them I thought? The early church and the ministry of Jesus was used as a comparison.

Cherie c.

Anonymous said...

First all Cherie, they didn't have to go to Jesus and multitudes chose not to! Only a small remnant that had contact with Jesus were saved and only those that had been saved understood fully that they were in the presence of divinity and this happened for the disciples after Jesus had risen from the dead. Notice how from that point onwards their witnesses and lives changed!

Sylvester said...

I see the point of this post...therefore, in the context of what is written, I agree that the western world has put a spin on church conferences. With that said, we live in the 21st Century and the means to preach the gospel has been adjusted with the times we now live in. Are all conferences bad: No. Can conferences be used to edify, teach and impart Jesus to people: Yes. The key is balance.

God Bless

Your points are well made Sylvester, however the key thing is to impart truth in a loving way without crippling our fellowman financially. This is happening less and less for many teachers are becoming more corrupt!

Hello Rick
Too broad brush surely. Our Lord preached to gatherings of over 10,000 - 5000 men fed at one time.
In the Chinese mainland meetings of such size ARE a tremendous encouragement to the saints who spend much time in isolation feeling constantly (even at the hands of the official "3-self" church) that they are a despised minority. Same for some parts of Africa and India - Mbele's conferences in Nigeria are the feeding of the 5000 all over again. The week before his conference was due to start they had nothing arranged whatsoever except that they had invited many churches to come.
Is listening to a CD the same as being there? Should not those who hear become the "living word" of what was spoken themselves (this is a separate and larger question).
I heard a brother say at a large UK conference for brothers in ministry/responsibility (500 is large for UK) that the most important thing was the links and connections and personal encouragement that took place. Seeing the buzz and excitement of brothers together he said he would not speak that morning, just allow the fellowship to continue. It was truly a blessed time with small groups all over the hall talking and praying together.

Anonymous, you sound like a Calvinist and I don't know if that is right or wrong, all I know is that in the days of Jesus, all people saw Him and heard Him, some were saved, some were not. But all heard him.

John 6:58-67

58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

59 These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?

61 When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?

62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?

63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

64 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.

65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?

All heard Him, but only some became His Apostles. Twelve to be exact.

All that were listening to Jesus heard Him, but only those who God decided to save truly followed Him for the remainder of their life.

Concerning the comment above by "unknown" with the time stamp 11:23 PM, which says among other things, about R.C. Sproul:

......."the general offices were moved in 1984, and the ministry was renamed. ( Yeah, he couldn't drive around in his limo in the snow and pothole covered streets and the ministry's Yacht was down in florida anyway. ).......

This is reflecting poorly on the whole character of the comment section as a whole, while so many others are earnestly and sincerely posting Christian comments according to the dictates of their hearts. I am at a loss as to how this vicious, and completely unfounded comment is allowed to remain on your board.

In my opinion all didn't hear Jesus! That is far from true. We are not told definitively about that in the Bible but practically speaking that would be an impossability.

Those however that didn't hear Jesus in the flesh were being taught by Almighty God.

My post was primarily about the western construct which operates more like a rock concert or vacation rather than a deep spiritual gathering void of the hedonistic trappings and the open man idolatry and with much prayer.

The statement "we cannot judge someones heart" is always taken out of context. YES, I CAN 'judge' or discern who and what somebody is(their intentions). For example, Jesus says that you'll know the false teachers by their fruits. Jesus said to stay away from false teachers. In order for me to know if it is a false teacher or not I have discern or 'Judge' his actions and what comes out of his mouth. So Jesus has already showed us their hearts. Actions = heart.

I believe this "don't judge anothers heart" has come from those who want to take advantage of others and use God's word to manipulate people. That way they can continue to spiritually abuse people without someone questioning them. And then you have those who think that they are being spiritual by "not judging someone elses heart." Those are the ones who chose to ignore the truth about a person.

So to conclude, I will 'judge' or discern about a person intentions. That's not sin but wisdom.

the Jordan at Jericho to the east.
33 But to the tribe of Levi, Moses did not give an inheritance; the LORD, the God of Israel, is their

Everything is really all about Jesus and while in agreement with the article...it all comes down to those who know Him(Jesus) not those who profess to know Him(Jesus).

Matthew 7:21-23

21“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’

23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
