Welcome Aboard the Titanic

WELCOME ABOARD THE TITANIC

I was saved by faith in Jesus almost 40 years ago. As I see what is happening around the world I wonder how I would have survived mentally and emotionally if I did not know Jesus. And in forty years the church has changed so dramatically that it takes your breath away if you are watching and if you even care. Yes there were large problems back in 1975 but what is taking place today is outrageous and shocking.
When I went to Bible College no one ever thought about joining with Mormons or the Roman Catholic Church. We all rejected the social gospel. The prosperity movement was just gaining steam and all of us knew it was wrong. Christian television was basically Billy Graham, Rex Humbard, and Robert Shueller and we all rejected Shueller. Back then there were things that every committed believer avoided. There were no motorcycles or cars or beds in the auditorium as props for preachers.
Preachers did not make outlandish promises that if you gave money God would save your family or get you houses and cars. Our evangelical churches never thought about having a New Years Eve bash and serving alcohol. We all knew foul language was wrong. Yes, we were patriotic back then but there was not the political fervor there is today. We prayed at prayer meetings. We were concerned for the lost and we witnessed and passed out tracts.
Things have changed since then. There is a spirit of greed and self righteousness which fills the pulpits and pews. And the world is barreling down to Armageddon. And yet while death and hell awaits this world its inhabitants are partying on the Titanic.

The great ship left Southampton on April 10, 1912 and she headed for New York City. It was her maiden voyage and it was filled with all sorts of wealthy passengers. 2224 passengers set sail that day including the ship’s designer. It was to be a gala event and most of the world was paying attention. The ship provided all the luxuries anyone could want on a ship, and everything seemed very normal. That is until just before midnight on April 14th. Without warning this great vessel hit an iceberg and began to sink.
It was widely presumed that the Titanic could not be sunk. But within a few hours she broke apart and sank. It was a great calamity and it made worldwide news. 1514 people lost their lives. While they partied eternity loomed. Surrounded by gold and tinsel, and faring sumptuously, their lives were required on that horrific night. Who among them sounded a warning? Who experienced any foreboding? The food was spectacular, the champagne was flowing, the music was inspiring, and all was well with the world. But in the darkness was an iceberg which stood between the Titanic and New York. Most would not live to see New York.
Close your eyes and imagine being on the great ship. Think of having no care. Think about enjoying all the wonderful amenities. Imagine being surrounded by lavish accoutrements and being waited on hand and foot. Now open your eyes and look around. We are sailing on the Titanic this very day. We enjoy all the technologies money can buy, and most of us will have to buy new and larger clothes next year. Even if they are not larger, many believers will still buy new clothes. Most believe this ship cannot sink.
The ship sails on.
Wars here and there and rumors of impending wars swirl around us. People massacred in Syria and elsewhere but it is just a news item. Professional football has begun and the dormant excitement is revived. The stores are filled with people buying school clothes and pens and paper and book bags. The election approaches, and like chromosomes taking sides before splitting, the political sides have been formed.
The ship sails on.
Bigger and better buildings provide for bigger and better congregations. Incredible music programs and all sorts of elaborate ministries for children often define a church. The preachers have rock star status and they have learned the art of fundraising very well. Tithing will help avoid God’s wrath and bring about much material blessings. Millions upon millions of dollars flow freely to television hucksters who fly in their own jets.
The ship sails on.
No longer satisfied with being inconvenienced by going to the movies to see explicit violence and sexual content, the cable companies pump loads of visual garbage into tens of millions of homes including professing believers. Promiscuous actors receive their awards and give lip service to Jesus. Church teens learn inappropriate behavior at an early age, and being armed with the social network and texting they delve deeply into areas reserved for marriage.
The ship sails on.
All kinds of marriage seminars are given throughout the evangelical community. Sermon series’ on how to have a happy marriage abound. Books and Cds flood couples with great advice for their marriage. Valentine’s Day banquets with special speakers uplift couples every year. But all the while adultery and divorce remain rampant.
The ship sails on.
The sex saturated culture is not enough for the church. She must encourage more and more sex with incredible frequency. Titlating sermons preached upon beds behind pulpits and on roof tops create sexual thirst. Preachers have clandestine rendezvous with illicit internet material as well as mental imagery involving other church women. This must be the path to purity.
The ship sails on.
The Joel Osteens and the Rick Warrens and the Rob Bells entertain the masses and throw out all kinds of theological fairy tales and the people love to have it so. Peruse the Christian bookstores and see professing believers who own them making money selling heresy and Christian trinkets. Listen to “Christian” television as men perfect all sorts of ways to separate people from their money with false promises of earthly success.
The ship sails on.
Sit back and take in the amazing sight as millions upon millions of people trudge to and fro on Sunday mornings with nary a change and with a redundancy that resembles rush hour traffic. The restaurants love the church folk as they provide much Sunday traffic for their establishments. Football games begin at 1:00 so everyone can get church out of the way and enjoy what Sundays are really for. Like an assembly line the parade of evangelical pew dwellers discharge their religious obligation secure in the knowledge that eventually heaven awaits them.
The ship sails on.
I know, how bleak. What a downer. Why not just enjoy yourself and bask in what God has provided? Yes, go ahead and dance. Pop the champagne! This ship will not sink unless we let the gays or Muslims or North Koreans or the liberals take away our earthly freedoms and sink this ship. And no one wants that. After all Captain Washington has set our course.
But lurking in the distance is an iceberg of colossal proportions. This one cannot be avoided. This is the iceberg of God’s judgment and it will soon come upon the entire world. Millions of church goers will be suddenly awakened but without a hope. The warnings will be history and the future will now be the present. Millions of professing believers may find that their profession was leaky to begin with and that their tepid confession will hold no water. They will seek for a life raft and find none. There will be only one chance and that chance is gone forever.
But millions of passengers have been told there are plenty of life rafts, in fact God has a seat for everyone regardless. False voices like Rob Bell have told then there is no iceberg, and that the only troubled waters are here on earth. Eternity will take care of itself. Do not worry, and if the ship should spring a leak, you can always put on a life vest later.
The ship sails on. The ship sails on. The ship sails on and on and on and…

Suddenly and soon…

The ship collides with a divine iceberg and has sunk.
All who trusted in this ship’s seaworthiness have perished.
Forever.

Until then, turn up the music and let then party roar.

There are too many tears flowing onto my keyboard to elicit a lengthy comment here.

Your post speaks profound truth. Messages such as these bring us back from our utopian space ships to the realities of this earth of which I am a part of for now, until I see Jesus face to face. There are times my soul longs for that moment.

LORD, I beg and plead of your forgiveness, in the Name of my precious Savior, Jesus Christ.

Wow! I don't think you could have put that any clearer, Rick. I pray we all wake up, quickly. Get off the Titanic, onto Noah's ark.

Amen, yet, Lord have mercy on us.

A long time I posted on how I didn't know who I was in Christ, and got a few responses to encourage me, and at the same time give the usual "but you are in Christ", so you should be content. It was a good response and I appreciate all my brethren here.

But, even then, there are still times when I feel 'homeless' on this earth, even when Christ's Church dwells here. Maybe it's a sense of 'Who is the Church?' If I can't find true identity with the christians in the West(and I'm not referring to blogs, but with physical fellowship of believers), where must I go to find true Christ-centered identity? I was partly brainwashed for the 24 years as a believer, coming against some odd doctrines and trying to work out my own salvation alone in my thoughts. One can't express their feelings, especially today, without being jumped on and accused of being branded as a "this christian" or a "that christian", or "of that strange fire type of christianity" or has a vein of this cultish/kind of christianity, or is a traditional-minded, reformist, Calvinist, Fundamentalist, Pentecostal type A to Z christian. No wonder I want to stay hidden in my spiritual cave.

This is what I mean about us being branded as "what group do you belong to?" or don't have anything to do with this or that group, they are anathema; or these worship the wrong way, or those........it's like there is this big invisible "beware" sign over every ministry, now even in the smaller churches.

I know it's so important to be discerning and it's right for disciples to point out false teachings, but, as we are watching the Titanic go down, which small crowd of believers should we run to and kneel and pray and keep watch with, and what more can we, here in the West, do, to stop people from partying and going down on the ship? The church elders are on the ship as well, and the scattered sheep on land are feeling alone and distressed. How long, Lord Jesus? And where and what and who should we be sharing the gospel with? The wolves have all but turned unbelievers away by the unrestrained hateful things they say. How can the offended unbelievers ever find Jesus in this?

I'm hoping that throughout the day, I'll be inspired to come up with a few answers, as I check in the Word. I want to be an edifier, and His Word has all the answers and His Holy Spirit has the calming effect we so desperately need.

The danger doesn't come from something hidden under the sea but from our wrong attitude to the LORD.

The Bible teaches that we will not all wake up quickly. Only a small remnant are blessed by God to come to Christ.

Man finds refuge not in Noah's ark but the ark of Lord Jesus Christ!

Job 40:7 "Now prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me:
:8 "Would you indeed annul My judgment? Would you condemn Me that you may be justified?
:9 Have you an arm like God? Or can you thunder with a voice like His?
:10 Then adorn yourself with majesty and splendor, And array yourself with glory and beauty.
:11 Disperse the rage of your wrath; Look on everyone who is proud, and humble him.
:12 Look on everyone who is proud, and bring him low; Tread down the wicked in their place.
:13 Hide them in the dust together, Bind their faces in hidden darkness.
:14 Then I will also confess to you That your own right hand can save you.

How many times does God have to show His power in all things? When God draws near, the mountains smoke and the earth trembles. Who can stand in His presence? Only through His saving grace by the blood of Jesus are we able.

      Do you feel
alone and distressed? Are you saying: How long, Lord Jesus? Instead start asking:
What can I do? Or what has the LORD already equipped me to do? Let' stop asking questions that get us nowhere.

Let's stop moaning about our predicament and roll up our sleeves and start teaching the unreached and untaught!

Cherishing the fellowship and companionship of all of your Scripture verses and comments here. Even though you point out truth J., there are those who garner wisdom in your warnings which may edify those who see the very same consequences resulting from the great apostasy.

Talk about despair? Between here and home, I just want to crawl into a cave. I live in a home with a titanic attitude and it scares me, worries me, but mostly causes much despair and some days its all I can do to keep the tears at bay. But I will just have to keep petitioning the Lord if I can continue to find the will.

No one wants true fellowship because it comes with accountability and even the most ardent follower does not like correction but is fast to give it. Fellowship should be all the
Word says, but our egos and pride, sad to say, but our pride, gets in the way of the love we should be showing the bretheran in all ways.

There are other titanics that we who say we are followers of Jesus are on, it is called self-reliance, pride, disobedience and fear. But the worst is fear. Fear of being looked at as crazy by the very people we call our brothers and sisters.

I have been shunned by brothers and sisters who think me judgmental, when all I was doing was pointing out the Word. I judge only those who say they follow Christ as we are told to do, but not in a fashion that puts us above the other. Although I have not done so, I have been accused of it. So I do not do that anymore. And it saddens me when I see someone in error, and I say nothing, I know I am going to have to answer for it. But if my correction is from the Word, why do they resist? By not saying anything, they stay in error, but if I say something and they resist, then I feel I have caused them to sin because they react out of pride, not conviction. The same happens when I try to do the same with those unsaved. I am isolated by the body of Christ and by those in the world.

I am already alone in a house filled with people. My so called brothers and sisters are just as hard hearted. And it makes me very sad.

Titanic Pastor Rick? No, I would say the Great Flood is fast approaching and we only have life boats when we need an ark. Love is waxing very cold, and I am struggling not to go the same way. I hold myself in check wanting to lash out due to the hurt, but I stay silent. No one cares anymore, no one cares if the whole world goes to hell and it tears me a part inside.

There is no fellowship, no laborers, and no love. So lets open up the champagne and get numb.

Sometimes sir/madame true believers live in despair. Sometimes we are truly troubled with what is going on in our lives and in the world. The pep talk is nice, but a bit of compassion is a expression of love for your fellow brother or sister in Christ, and much needed from time to time. Even Jesus had compassion on His disciples when they were afraid or down. And John even wrote, "Even so, come, Lord Jesus."

Sometimes it is hard to witness death upon the living. Are you immune to what is going on around you? If so, check your heart, it may need some repenting.

  9. While we see we need to hear again that there is power in the Word of God! Christ died on a cross for the sins of His people, was buried and rose up from the dead now ruling and reigning waiting until His enemies are crushed and disposed of according to the teachings of the Scriptures!

What God began for Him He will finish!

Romans 10:13 For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?
15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!"

Philippians 1:6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

If after all that, the following, then, seems to underscore your article, for me at least, giving me a fresh clear understanding and WARNING:

Philippians 3:17 Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.
18 For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ.
19 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.
20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

To Our God be all the glory and honor and praise both now and forevermore!

Spot on Pastor Rick! Are Christians in the west marked differently than the rest of the world, or do the churched look and act just like the rest of the world? Is there a distinguishable difference for I do not see nor hear one.

And if you are different than the rest of the world, would you be loved, cherished, embraced, and encouraged in the faith once and for all delivered to the saints, or would you be asked to leave......I think we all know the answer to that one.

Dear readers, have you told your neighbor about this or are you too busy stating your unbiblical opinion that nobody is listening to what God's children are saying?

The LORD hasn't called His children to wail from morning to evening!

If you do that it will sap your energy and how can you help yourself let alone anybody else?

How can someone who is loved by the Lover of Lovers make a habit of moaning, whinning and complaining? Do you not yet
understand that such behavior is contrary to God's will?

Praise the LORD, for He is good!

The conversation here is just exactly what I've been reading and witnessing with christian commenters. Sometimes christians can be so cruel. There is a great divide among the christian community, well, the US right now. Maybe it's always been there and maybe it's been in my own back yard. But, it compelling and there must be something to learn from it. Debates and unfruitful arguments and christians attacking other christians and getting ired over secular politics; this is a teachable moment us. It's hurting the cause, pushing unbelievers away and giving them reason to be repulsed by the church.

What I mean is that we are witnessing the prophecy of "men's hearts wax cold", and it's manisfested in the Church. There are haves and have-nots. No in-betweens need apply. The haves are optimistic, happy, arrived, and the have-nots are sometimes like Job, living in emotional/physical/spiritual pain. Isn't it true that the happy christians only want to hang around other happy christians? Church fellowship is almost non-existent and unfortunately, because the 'middle-class' christians are working the hardest and feeling the brunt of the capitalist machine, they can't say, "don't worry, be happy". Their main concern is paying bills and struggling through life's trials and tribulations. Not every christian has a happy home; it's not an entitled 'promise' or blessing. Many don't have tools and charisma and health and a strong supportive family back-up. Many are shunned from their families because they humbly follow Christ. And when we all, whether rich or poor or in-between need spiritual comfort, there are few christians that will put themselves out to encourage with patience.

Anonymous who feels that some complain and whine may be a part of the happy camp. While it's good to be thankful and edifying and positive, the Word also says to rejoice with those who rejoice, and mourn with those who mourn. My day's verse was James 5:16 "Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent pray of a righteous man availeth much". If the Jobs need to confess their feelings of non-accomplishment and frustration with their situations, isn't it good to try to encourage them?

I think that in this verse healing can encompass healing of body, soul, and mind.

These days are heavy and burdensome; I understand Cherie; it's a grieving time for some of us. For others, it's a bountiful season, but, when each of us is going through our seasons, it would so much better to offer encouragement, rather than judgment. And that goes to those who feel it's their duty to 'say it like it is' also. While "telling it like the Word says it is" might be right, it's got to be done with love and humility, and done maybe alone (one to one), not on blogs in front of everyone. That is very embarrassing. None of us really know each other's hearts and we barely know each other and shouldn't judge from afar. I've been through all the emoticons of church life, and we brethren sometimes don't yet know how to edify one another. I know I need to heed everything I say too.

The walk is not easy, is it?

Well said J, well said. Not all that come to this blog is true, because who can have a new heart in Christ and say the things they say. No one can. Those in Christ repent when they sin or error, love unconditionally, and forgive liberally. Use conviction as a way to grow in Christ and are quick to help with love and support. Also, most when they correct, do not have a malicious intent, even if they do not communicate it well.

Those who write the heartless rhetoric are to be prayed for and best unchallenged. Let the Lord deal with them. I am no longer going to engage those who just want to be hurtful and ignorant of others, especially to the bretheran. And J, since this is the only way to communicate, and the only way to see if someone errors, the correction must be done, in what you say is a public forum. How else is it to be done since we do not have contact information, nor do many give it. So although "public" to let someone continue in error will have to be answered for at Judgment Day. But we must remember to do in a loving manner. I am sure my words will fall upon deaf ears and hard hearts. Love you J.

P.S. To all who address me and without trying to sound petty, I would appreciate it if people would spell my name correctly. It is cherie, not cheri. I am not angry, but I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Sharing basic common sense advice isn't stone throwing! It isn't cruel but kind!

Women whether you are saved or unsaved you need to reminded that you must "work" on loving your husband.

It is time to stop complaining that he doesn't read the same books that you do?
Make it your goal to love them more selflessly than ever before.

Women, complaining online about your family challenges isn't God's will for you! God's spirit is self controlled. Trust Him to mature you in this area. If something is burdening you in your relationship with your husband take it to the LORD.

Let Him "listen" to your frustrations and pray for cleansing, so that you stop your current behavior that hinders rather helps foster a good relationship.

Lorena, I made reference to what you wrote because for the general reader it is misleading and wrong.

The LORD encourages good students to write clearly. Writing for God isn't about making a play on words but about glorifying the name above all names.

If for example someone who didn't know that Christ was a place of refuge read what you wrote it wouldn't help them to understand what is needful.

When we right we should be mindful of people who need the truth and resist "playing around" with words that can very easily mislead sincere searchers for truth.

Reine Gnade, Rick's post is called "Welcome to the Titanic" ...I was making my point to get off the bad ship on to the good one. (using the ark) It's the same as stop being a part of this world and return to Jesus Christ. I don't think anyone misunderstood what I meant.

All of us know what Rick was talking about without believing we are actually on the Titanic, about to hit an iceberg.

Lorena, please ignore and pray for those who think they have arrived and for the rest of us who haven't. Most understood what you were saying.

And to the one who cannot reveal themselves but feel it necessary to admonish the women regarding loving their husbands, I am sure the post it somewhat directed at me; please note I do love my husband or I wouldn't put up with his hardheartedness towards me and my sons and mostly the Lord. If I loved myself more than him, I would have left years ago. I love the Lord more, so my staying is based upon obedience to God and to the vow I made 28 years ago. However, some days are most difficult due to his cruelty, and it is at those times that we should be able to get support from our brothers and sisters in the Lord. Also to request prayer.

    Philippians 2

2 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,

2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

If all you can do is scold, then don't say anything at all. People are hurting enough. To say the things you have said is just mean and if this was my blog, I would ban you. What you say isn't out of love because of the way you say it. Telling someone to stop complaining is mean. Why don't you just keep silent and pray for those who are hurting. Let God the Holy Spirit bring to their mind the conviction of complaining too much. We are flesh and blood, or did you forget that. I will be praying for you to repent and be forgiven. As I do with my husband when he is mean, i forgive him without him even asking, which he doesn't. He needs my love and my prayers all the more since he is headed where no one wants to go unless he repents. Not for my sake but for the Glory of God and his own sake. The meaner he is the more "coals" he heaps upon his head.

    Romans 12:20
Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

And so, I forgive you too, although I am sure you don't think you did anything wrong.

    Matthew 18:21-23

21 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?

22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

LORD, You are the great restorer of peace. You see how diligent Cherie is in her studies. I ask that you would bless her with your gift of restorative peace, so that she can find increased enjoyment as a wife and mother.

Thank You, treasured heavenly Father for showering Your love on Cherie and her family, so that a true interest in exploring for truth can continue to grow in their hearts to Your glory!

Yup, I do know, Noah's ark does not bring anyone to Christ...and the Titanic isn't really the world.

    I give up...

Thank you Cherie c. my sister.

Lorena, many of us understood your metaphors regarding the ark etc. I learn a lot from you dear sister. Glory to God for the wisdom He has given you.

Rick, I don't know how you put up with all the bickering back and forth in the comments. It's all so carnal and childish.

  30. Yes, it is. We need to learn to sometimes let things go.
